Federico Zandomeneghi was born into a family of sculptors in Venice but preferred to paint. Having moved to Paris in 1874, he was soon exhibiting his canvases with the Impressionists. La Modiste, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, is typical of his work in that it focuses on a female subject in a quiet moment, with rich, swirling colours offering a counterpoint to the air of stillness

Made more than 2,700 years ago, this bronze figure of an archer is kitted out with a horned helmet, double tunic and shin-protecting greaves. It comes from the prehistoric civilisation that thrived on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia during the Nuragic period, which produced works ranging from monumental stone towers to finely crafted bronzes depicting animals, boats and warriors

George Sand and Honoré de Balzac are among the contributing writers
