Editor’s picks

The work of Huang Yongyu is incredibly wide-ranging, encompassing epic landscapes, figure studies, minutely detailed images of flora and fauna, and joyous cartoons featuring comic animals; but Red Lotus, painted in 1978, is something else again. Taking the classic form of a hanging scroll, it is a vivid and vigorous modern take on the age-old tradition of flower painting

This parcel-gilt silver büttenman — a decorative figure in the form of a grape-picker and his dog, with a basket on his back that serves as a drinking vessel — dates from around‌ 1590‌. Crafted by Joachim Hiller, it is a rarity in that it is made of precious metal rather than wood, and the base is unusually elaborate, carved with hunting scenes in which dogs and horses chase bears and other animals

Estimate: €60,000-80,000

Dating from the second half of the 18th century, A Mediterranean coastal scene is by Charles-François Grenier de Lacroix. The artist was born by the sea, in Marseille, and maritime views dominate his work. Like most of his paintings, this is an imagined scene, with a picturesque crag hanging above dancers, a musician and sailors, while the towers of a city rise over the waters beyond

Estimate: €40,000-60,000
