A thoughtful way to say: You’ve got this!

Introducing my eldest daughter Alita jnr, who just turned 18.

I can still remember the very first time I looked into her tiny eyes and fell completely in love. I must have kissed her little hands and feet a thousand times, overwhelmed with gratitude that she was mine. Even now, when I look at her, I still see that little girl with bouncy curls, sparkling mischievous brown eyes, and a laugh so contagious it could light up a room. She has always seen the good in people.

But when we celebrated her 18th birthday, I realized something had shifted — my little girl had grown into a strong, self-reliant young woman, with a willpower that humbles even grown men. She’s fun, witty, full of heart, and her theme song could only be Inge 2 from Die Piesangskille.

As every parent knows, one of the most stressful milestones in a scholar’s life is the Record Exams and then the Finals. Wanting to ease her stress, I put together a small care package: her favorite chocolates, a stress ball, cappuccino sticks, Stress Away oil, a mug that said “You’ve Got This,” and a personalized pen.

Last night, during some precious bonding time, she told me something that moved me deeply: “Mom, that pen feels like a hug. Every time I got stressed in the exam, I held onto it tighter, imagining you standing right behind me.”

It reminded me that sometimes, it’s the little things that carry the most weight. Without realizing it, my humble gift box became her anchor.

To all the moms and dads who feel like they are writing Matric exams all over again — because let’s be honest, we go through it with them — my prayer for you is wisdom, patience, and the strength to be the anchor your child needs during this season. Sometimes, one thoughtful gesture is all it takes to remind them: You’ve got this.
