Editor’s picks

Fantastical imagery is key to the work of Ronald Ventura, and his 2013 painting Gateway is an epic example. The Manila-born artist depicts the jaws of a gigantic tiger gripping a merry-go-round in which horses and hounds are shadowed by skeletal versions of themselves, while skulls float by and images of ruined Italian landmarks, including St Peter’s Basilica and the Rialto bridge, loom in the panels above

Estimate: HK$3,000,000-5,000,000

Marc Chagall reimagines two icons of Paris in Notre-Dame et la Tour Eiffel, a lithograph in black and blue dating from 1960. In a magical moonlit scene, seemingly viewed through a window, a bouquet of blooms appears to burst from the spire of the cathedral, while the wrought-iron tower defies its rigidity and bends towards it, as if it too has become an organic form

Estimate: £4,000-6,000

Vietnamese artist Le Pho’s Portrait of a Lady dates from around‌ 1940‌. The sitter’s status is suggested by her pearl necklace and embroidered dress — and by the silk-lined mink on the back of her chair. She is thought to be Jeanne Rosalie Villessot, daughter-in-law of the American painter Ralph Wormeley Curtis, and the work is likely to have been painted at her home, the Palazzo Barbaro in Venice

Estimate: HK$800,000-1,500,000

The hand-carved wooden figures of German artist Stephan Balkenhol are sometimes reproduced in bronze editions, as with Atlas, from‌ 2017‌. This modern take on the Titan who carries the world on his shoulders, here represented by a man in a white shirt and black trousers, was made for Doctors without Borders, which provides medical care for victims of war and natural disaster

Estimate: £7,000-10,000
