You know what bothers me?

Articles about how people “can’t stop.”

Can’t stop what, you might wonder.

Just about everything, but mostly the most basic consumer behavior.

A CostCo snack fans “can’t stop talking about.”

Netflix viewers “can’t stop sobbing” at this romantic drama.

Amazon shoppers “can’t stop buying” some white blouse.

It seems like the nebulous “people” are forever helpless to resist consuming, well, anything.

At the very least, writers working at various publications have been tasked with making it seem so.

Because, I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but it sort of seems like everything everywhere wants to sell you something these days.

I know I’m one to talk, but come on.

The ads aren’t just on the page, they are the news.

On top of that, they choose the most annoying phrases in a bid to get your attention.

And so people just “can’t stop.”

But hey, maybe it works for them. Maybe “can’t stop” really is the secret to engagement.

Probably not.

If it doesn’t work on me, though, then maybe it bothers me more than it should.
