Editor’s picks

Clement Clarke Moore was a distinguished theologian, but his best-known work is the 1822 poem A Vist from St Nicholas (‘’Twas the night before Christmas’). This manuscript copy was handwritten by the author and sent to a family friend, the Hon. R.S. Chilton, in 1853. It is one of only five known autograph copies of the work, three of which are in museum collections

This majestic 19th-century gold bracelet evokes the spirit of the classical world and its vivid mythology. On one side is a micromosaic of the sun god Apollo in his chariot, surrounded by female attendants and preceded by the winged, torch-bearing deity Phosphorus and Aurora, goddess of the dawn; on the other, in an elaborate filigree setting, is the single word ‘ROMA’

A Madonna and Child for the modern age, Alex Katz’s Untitled, painted around 1960, depicts his wife Ada and their newborn son Vincent. By using oils on panel and placing the image in a circle, the New York artist alludes to the Italian Renaissance, and more specifically the tondo — a circular artwork of a kind given to wives by their husbands after childbirth

Estimate: $100,000-150,000
